The Campania Plain has always been densely populated in spite of the recurring volcanic eruptions of the Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, which have often forced people to abandon temporarily the place, and also contributed to increase the soil’s fertility, encouraging in this way farming activities and populations coming back after the disaster.
The speech will show some excavations dating back to Ancient Bronze Age which present evidences of sites destroyed by Avellino Pumice eruptions, as well as the impact of other eruptions on the territory around the volcano.
Furthermore there will be a brief look at the principal eruptions occurred from that period onward up to 1631, when the catastrophic events started to be “documented” first by “gouaches” as well as by the travellers reports and later on by photographs.
